Treeline Installs a Log Drying Kiln
Treeline has recently taken delivery of a wood fuelled log drying kiln and so can now offer our customers kiln dried firewood in addition to our existing products.
This move has been prompted by many stove suppliers and manufacturers recommending that people only burn kiln dried wood in their stoves so as to ensure their smooth and safe operation.
Many of the problems or frustrations found with wood burning appliances can be put down to fuel quality. In comparison to other types of fuel, firewood can be highly variable with little in the way of accepted standards or quality. Terms like 'green', 'seasoned' and 'kiln dried' are the most commonly used explanations of the firewood you might be getting but are largely meaningless without something to quantify what this means. For example, wood could be 'seasoned' for several years in a heap with shade and poor airflow and so still be very wet.
The staff at Treeline pride themselves on ensuring that our naturally seasoned firewood is as dry as possible We leave our timber in stacks to start the seasoning process, then split and store the logs in well ventilated sheds for several months. This results in naturally seasoned logs that have a moisture content of less than 25%. An impressive feat in our typically damp Scottish environment! But we didn't want to stop there, the new kiln enables us to expand our log range and offer truly superior logs with less than 20% moisture content at anytime of year.
The kiln is heated using a 175kW bulk biomass boiler which burns any waste wood from our processing and sawmilling operations as well as poor quality timber from thinning operations in local woodlands. This not only ensures that it is green and renewable but also reduces the volume of waste wood material which would have to be disposed of elsewhere.
